You may have seen this stuff popping up in your social media feeds in the last couple of months, and I have too. If you haven’t seen it yet, or you’re still considering whether you want to try it out, then read on! I decided that I wanted to see what all the hype was about for myself, found a couple versions of them that were inexpensive, and thought, “what the heck!” Here are the links to the products that I purchased.
Starry Cocktail Magic Lip Tattoo : 6 Pack (Vibrant Red is what I used for this post)
First I’m gonna talk about application.
Let’s start with the lips. First, this stuff is SUPER goopy, and not in a Gweneth Paltrow kind of way (obvi since this kind of product is definitely not on Gweneth’s radar). It’s very thick and sticky, and not the easiest to apply. I knew right off the bat that the angled plastic tip was not going to be precise enough for my type-a-ness, so I found a little brush to use to make sure it didn’t get all over my face outside of my lips. I would highly recommend this because once it touches any skin, it will immediately stain it. Resist the urge to clean up edges with your fingers because you WILL have colored finger tips for the day. And you for sure don’t want to get this stuff on any clothing so keep that in mind. Also, don’t be surprised if you get some on your teeth too. Not fun. I will say though that it smelled very nice.
Now for the brows. Get some Q-Tips ready… and I mean a lot of them. The brush on this one is not super precise either and since the instructions say to apply liberally, there is not an easy way to do this without getting outside of the lines of the shape you’re trying to achieve. So I found it easiest to get the general area well covered and then come back with the Q-Tips to clean up the edges.
Then you wait. For the lips, the instructions say to wait for 5-6 minutes, and the instructions for the brows say to wait 2 hours or that you can sleep with it on too if you want. Keep in mind that the brows take at least an hour and a half to fully dry (if you’ve applied liberally like they tell you to). So if you go the route of sleeping in it, you will want to apply it well in advance of getting in bed. Unless you want your pillows to have questionable brown smear marks all over them. Ew. I opted for the two hour wait time.
While the lip product does seem a bit easier to work into a regular routine, with only 5-6 minutes of wait time, the color just didn’t last very long. You can see in the above two photos that in the two hours time I waited between taking the lips off and the brows off, it had already significantly faded, and I had been very careful not to eat or drink anything during that time. I will say though that I would be more likely to continue using this because it fades pretty naturally which I liked, but it’s certainly not going to replace my regular lip colors.
As far as the brow gel goes, I really liked that it really didn’t fade and I didn’t have to worry about rubbing it off like I do with my reg brow makeup, but I have one major issue with it. The instructions tell you not to use any “detergent” on your face for 24 hours. 😳 So when I washed my makeup off at the end of the day (only about 14 hours), all my tedious work was completely gone! It might have well been regular brow makeup at that point! I wish I could go without washing my face for 24 hours, but I just can’t. So, I can’t really attest to this being more semi-permanent than one day because I couldn’t follow that part of the instructions. If you are someone that just uses makeup wipes so you could avoid your brows, or can sleep in your makeup without having major issues (like I would), than you may have better luck. But also, two hours dry time?! So inconvenient right?!
And feel free to let me know if you see something that you’d want me to try out for you before you spend your money on it! I’m happy to be your guinea pig! 😉
